DRAGON BALL GT is the fourth Dragon Ball series which is often regarded as either a continuation of the anime television series, Dragon Ball Z, or more simply as an alternate take on its characters and storyline. This story arc lasts for 64 episodes that aired in Japan from November 19, 1996 to April 27, 1997. The TV special "The History of Trunks" occurs after episode forty-nine of this series. The final three episodes are recaps of previous events due to the show's discontinuation. The series, along with the previous three Dragon Ball manga series, was released in the United States by Funimation Entertainment in 2003 on DVD. There are two boxes that contain 10 episodes each. The first box is called "Dragon Box Set 1". It contains episodes 1-51 while the second box is called "Dragon Box Set 2". It contains episodes 52-83. A third box called "Dragon Box Set 3" was released in 2009 which contains episodes 54-81. These releases are also available on Blu-ray under the name "DBZ/GT Complete Series". Dragon Ball GT was an unusual series compared to the previous Dragon Ball manga and anime because the story has never been told before in a live action format and it uses a different animation style than previous series. The viewer sees the battle between Goku and Vegeta, but instead of seeing the actual battle from their point of view, they see it from their kid counterparts' point of view. In this series, humanoid dinosaur characters called Saiyans are kept in a zoo by King Yemma until they suddenly turn violent. The Saiyans escape from their zoo and suddenly attack Earth with super powered warriors called Z fighters to destroy them. The Saiyans were locked away in a cave by a wizard because they went berserk. The series begins with an aging Goku and a dead Vegeta giving their son, Trunks a sword that he uses to battle evil forces. The Z fighters, who are children, join together to fight these evil Saiyans and protect Earth from their attacks. The following chart represents the Dragon Ball GT episodes and storylines from Japanese TV Toonami's left column (episodes 1-64) and the Funimation dubs from the U.S. rights box set right column (episodes 1-64). The original Japanese Toonami airing on Fuji TV is on the left and the Funimation dub is on the right. If there is a difference between the two, please check the Funimation dub table to confirm which one we're using. Funimation released the entire series on DVD and Blu-ray for "Dragon Box Z" on May 19, 2014.
